These woods, flamed birch and blackened oak are historic and environmentally friendly options which are unique in beauty and figure.  The flamed birch trees were cut hundreds of years ago almost to extinction along the U.S. and Canadian border of the great lakes.

Virgin Growth Timber – A Piece of History for the Future

Hundreds of years ago, lumberjacks from France and England were dispatched to the forests of North America's Great Lakes. Their mission: to supply logs for shipbuilding and the homes of Europe's nobility.
After cutting the trees, the logs werre shipped eastward on log rarfts, many of which broke up on the journey losing up to one-third to the water's bottom. Perfectly preserved underwater, these 300–1200 year-old virgin timbers possess unique figure and graining qualities impossible to duplicate with today's common woods.
Current salvage and recovery techniques make it possible to retrieve this virtually extinct wood and create beautiful furniture with finishes not seen for centuries. Additionally, because they are salvaged and therefore environmentally friendly, they can be used to achieve LEED* points for environmental concerns.
